Supreme Sculpture

Krsna is the sculpture and we are being molded.

At first we feel like a dark cold stone, no life, no happiness….

And the constant ‘chipping’ hurts us.

We despair and cannot see a positive end to it all.

But as Rupa Goswami says in NOI – we have to have faith, confidence and enthusiasm.

Trust that the sculpture knows what he is doing

We cannot see the sculpture’s vision but he knows what a beautiful work of art he is creating with his constant chipping away - sometimes little chips and sometimes large chunks .. it really hurts!

But as we learn to tolerate the chips (the tests) we gradually surrender our false ego and allow the Supreme Sculpture to mold the beautiful masterpieces that we  – pure spirit souls – are ….

The Wise Lesson of the Sat-Nav - Be a Sheep !

So normally, we hear the words: "Don't be a sheep!"

Makes sense, as otherwise we could just be "another face in the crowd."

Be a sheep.

So why the reversal?

Because to be inspired by others is natural...to have a role model....a hero or heroine....someone we look up to...some we aspire to be like.

The question is: who is it for you?

Your parents?
A close friend?
The latest fashionable personality in the media - here today and gone tomorrow?
A famous personality that made great achievements in the history of the world?

Look back on each day as it ends....

Who did we talk about?

Who did we read about?

Who did we listen to?

Who did we spend time with?

Who was on our minds?

Who influenced the decisions we made? What was the result? Did we make meaningful progress?

Who did we trust?

Who brought out the best in us?

Who brought out the worst in us?

Who helped us grow?

The timeless wisdom of the Bhagavad Gita says:

sańgāt sañjāyate kāmaḥ

And Srila Prabhupada explains this statement of Lord Krishna's:

"In Bhagavad-gita (2.62) it is stated, sangat sanjayate kamah: one's desires and ambitions develop according to the company one keeps. It is often said that a man is known by his company, and if an ordinary man associates with devotees, he will certainly develop his dormant Kṛṣṇa consciousness." The Nectar of Instruction, Srila Prabhupada's purport to verse 4.

Life's a journey - where are we going?

That's where our trusty Sat-Nav comes in !! :D

What does the Sat-Nav do?

Cue - cheesy Sat-Nav voice:

"Turn right here"
"Take the third exit"
"You have now reached your final destination."

Without our Sat-Nav, we are lost as to how to get to where we want to.

In the Srimad Bhagavatam 7.5.31, the saintly child prince Prahlad Maharaj says:

na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiḿ hi viṣṇuḿ

In other words, those who get distracted by superficial pursuits and goals, forget that the real goal of life is to go back home, back to Godhead and engage in the service of Lord Vishnu (Krishna).

So today I share: The Lesson of the Wise Sat-Nav - Be a sheep.

How to be a sheep?

Shravanam - hear

If we don't listen to the Sat-Nav:

* ATTENTIVELY

* WITH ABSORPTION

* AND COMPLETE UNDIVIDED FOCUS

....we miss the turning and end up somewhere we don't want to be.

As we get in our cars each day, the destination of true success and happiness is certainly reached by hearing attentively from the spiritual Sat-Nav association around us:

** The Hare Krishna maha mantra

** Srila Prabhupada - who speaks through his books and classes

** Spiritual teachers  - our gurus

** Spiritual friends, who also eagerly want to get to that forgotten destination of the heart.

Be the right kind of sheep.... follow truly inspiring personalities, and go baaaaaaaaa-ck to Godhead :D

The real seer of the truth

Who is it that looks out of your eyes?

I mean who is it that is looking out of your face?

It can't be the eyes.

If you remove the eyes from their socket and put them on a shelf can they see anything?

No ...

So who is it that is looking out of the eyes socket?

Have a think for a while.

Meditate on that for a while

Who is it?

That is you my dear friend.

YOU - the Soul - a part of God.

Remove the arm and the consciousness still remains

Remove the lung and the consciousness till remains

That viewer through the eye sockets still remains

Who is this silent witness?

That is you ...

The real you

The soul you

Take a few minutes and meditate on that my dear friend

Meditation on Krishna

Here is a short meditation on Krsna which I wrote for one of my counsellee meetings:

Imagine water trickling  - softly - over a low river bed
There are some shiny stones visible in the clear water
As you move your eyes up you see a foot - it is pink underneath and grey/blue on top
The nails are shiny, clear and cut short
There is a sweet smell - indescribable - emanating from this foot

As your eyes move up you see a slender leg - grey/blue and so soft - like cotton wool

Slowly your eyes move up and you see that this person is wearing a yellow dhoti on his lower part of the body.
It is silk and soft to touch
There is a red cloth belt tied around the waist - with a flute tucked into it.

The flute is made of bamboo wood

You see this man is bare chested - his chest broad and strong yet youthful.

On his chest is a necklace with a valuable jewel

Around his neck and hanging to his waist is a fragrant flower garland - white - with bees sweetly droning around it

His neck has markings on it in 3 places

His face is revealed ...

You see his lotus like eyes - they are broad and clear - with a reddish tinge

His nose is small like a button

His lips are red and smiling at you

His hair is soft, shiny and hangs in curls around his shoulders

He has shark shaped earrings

In his hair is a peacock feather - slightly fluttering in the gentle breeze

This is Krishna

The supreme personality of godhead

From him- this person you see in front of you - emanates planets and universes

From him - the man in front of you - all demigods bow and take instructions

This man is time personified

This man knows past, present and future

This man has entered into every universe, living entity, atom and .... your heart.

This man sitting in front of you now is your supreme goal both in this life and after your dead

How well do YOU know this man?

Envy

I don't like what I see

I feel all twisted up inside

Why her?

Why is she getting all the attention?

Don't you know what she is like?

Did you know she does not get on with her in laws?

She has issues with her own brother you know?

To the world is a 'lady' to my heart she is a demon.

Oh why her?

Why can't people see what I see?

Why can't people see through my vision?

I know the truth.

I know what she is really like.

She is not sincere

She does not care really

You don't know what she did 5 years ago ... if I told you than you would be shocked.

But still she gets the recognition.

She gets the praise?

Why her?

And ....

Why not me?

ENVY

STAMP IT OUT BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE!!

Keep your false ego at the door please!

How can we truly care for someone?

It seems that some relationships are just based on shallow expectations - you agree with everything I say and I will like you.

All it takes is one 'constructive criticism' and the foundations of your whole relationship come toppling down.

Srila Prabhupada explains how the Guru can be cutting with his words as this wakes up the disciple from ignorance.

We all need to accept this type of advice - or have a friend whom we trust to give this sort of advice.

It is not good enough to just follow the 'cutting' words of the Guru and than fall apart when your peers or seniors try to advise you.

Our false ego's should be left outside the association of devotees if we truly want to learn and grow within their association.

Krsna is always speaking to us - through the Guru, through the devotees, through sastras, even through nature and other people around us.

We simple have to be open to His different ways of speaking.

And the first step in doing this is to keep the false ego at bay.

Woohoo it's pay day!! Or not? :S

So here is a snippet of my weekly timesheet in my current position as a healthcare professional (Pharmacy Technician).

I fill it in eagerly every week !

Why? Because without it, all the hours I put in at work bear no fruit.

How will I pay my rent?
How will I put food on the table?
How will I afford my shopping sprees? :D

Generally, I work 7.5 hours a day, 9am-515pm 37.5 hours a week. And at the end of each week, my manager signs me off, having seen me work these hours.

And that is how I get paid.

Similarly I was thinking - when I fill out my sadhana chart - I have to be honest and open every day, about:

How many rounds have I chanted?
What time did I wake up?
What time did I go to sleep?
How much time have I spent reading Srila Prabhupada's books?
How much time have I spent hearing Srila Prabhupada's classes?
How much time have I spent doing services?
How much time have I spent attending KC programmes and classes?

I can't cheat myself or others, just like can't cheat my manager. He is at work and he sees what I am up to.

Similarly, the Supersoul is there 24/7 and His empowered devotees - the spiritual master and the Vaishnavas also see me - my spiritual practices, external actions and more importantly sense my internal moods, motivations and intentions.

The Sadhana Chart is my spiritual timesheet as my ultimate occupation is that: I am an eternal servant of Krishna.

"It is the living entity's constitutional position to be an eternal servant of Kṛṣṇa."

If I do not go to work and hand a blank timesheet to my manager, and I cry, "Why did I not get paid this week???" - I have no one to blame but myself.

No pain, no gain.

We get out of anything what we put into it.

Enthusiastically performing my spiritual practices - externally and internally, is how I can access the wages of mercy from Krishna and His devotees.

Therefore The Sadhana Chart is not a formality, or just a "tick-box" exercise. It is my open and honest offering of love: "Dearest guru, Krishna and Vaishnavas. Here is my sadhana chart for your pleasure. For the good activities I say: Just see what I have done by your mercy...and for my shortcomings...please forgive me and help me to become a better servant."

Time

Dear Friends,

I was watching a Sunday Feast Class on 10 February 2013 on-line at ISKCON London  (http://www.iskcon-london.org/temple-broadcast.html).

Candramauli Maharaj gave the class and said something which has stuck in my mind like a transcendental superglue:

"A devotee only has one fear - am I going to waste time?"

When it comes to time, there are so many

.....things to do
.....people to see
.....places to go
.....books to read
.....goals I want to achieve

I can have days where I feel like this :

I ask myself: "How do I make the best use of my time?"

One word is the key to successfully using time: PRIORITY.

Krishna explains the principle of priority in Bhagavad Gita 2.41 to His friend Arjuna:

vyavasāyātmikā buddhir
ekeha kuru-nandana
bahu-śākhā hy anantāś ca
buddhayo 'vyavasāyinām

TRANSLATION
Those who are on this path are resolute in purpose, and their aim is one. O beloved child of the Kurus, the intelligence of those who are irresolute is many-branched.

I am realising more and more, that in order to let Krishna in, I need to chant His name as a top priority.

Getting up early for 4am is my Everest!! And instead of waking up to spend time with everyone's best friend: the Holy Names of the Maha Mantra...I opt for another best friend -

But one thing is for sure without doubt: that when I wake up early and spend quality time with Radha and Krishna's Holy names, I know - that was TIME well spent.

I see the PRACTICAL DIFFERENCE in my day, in my attentiveness and effectiveness in my duties at work, in my interactions with family, friends, colleagues and new people I meet. I learn and grow spiritually through these experiences and they become meaningful exchanges with Krishna's loving hand and presence underlying it all.

It takes CONSISTENT FAITH in the holy names, not one day of enthusiasm and then I slump. The Holy Name is not cheap.

Because it is chant FIRST and THEN Krishna's mercy will come, the tendency is to: use my time to do something else, something that may appear "better" and "more effective" - only to end up a fruitless pursuit.

So....."How do I make the best use of my time?"

Srila Prabhupada says, trees lives hundred and hundreds of years, but what is the quality of their lives?

Time in and of itself IS NOT valuable.

How we USE time, makes it valuable OR not.

If I want to make my days ahead COUNT, if I want my breath to be taken away by Krishna's kindness, I will be "resolute in purpose", to improve my relationship with the Holy Names.

How to succeed in this endeavour?

It will take:

1. PRACTICE (makes perfect :0) ) - make early chanting a HABIT
2. DETERMINATION
3. FAITH
4. THE TWO SECRET KEYS (coming up at the end !! Keeping you in suspense so don't peak ahead :0))

What is faith?

Faith is: the domino effect.

Caitanya Caritāmṛta Madhya 22.62

"Śraddhā is confident, firm faith that by rendering transcendental loving service to Kṛṣṇa one automatically performs all subsidiary activities. Such faith is favorable to the discharge of devotional service.

In essence, calling out the Holy Names is like pushing that first domino. That initial contact is so powerful.....that if one chants the Maha Mantra from the heart, without offense, EVERYTHING else (EVERY other domino, every subsidiary activity !! ) falls into place - EFFORTLESSLY and we make the best decisions in all times, places and circumstances.

How? Because we made quality time for the Holy Names first. Not mechanically, but with faith, love and devotion. "I need your help in the day that lies ahead and at every moment Krishna, therefore I always depend on and take shelter of You. Please guide me in all I do."

And the TWO SECRET KEYS I have kept you in suspense for, to successfully chanting the Holy Name are:

1. ASSOCIATION

This is will mean more if you know the Beatles song...."Oh, I get by with a little help from my friends !" :D

When I associate with devotees who get up early and chant, their good habit is contagious and I catch their fever for the Holy Names....their enthusiasm inspires my heart too.

Our connection with Krishna's Holy Name is through association with, service to and dependence on the mercy of guru and the devotees. And this is explained by HH Bhakti Rasamrita Maharaj:

"Serving the devotees is really a shortcut to Goloka Vrindavan even more than serving the Holy name. Because when we serve devotees we get a taste for chanting the Holy Name."

2. Reading Srila Prabhupada's books regularly, every day.

So as my family and friends will know, I am half a dentist :D Studied Dentistry at King's College London, and though the tables turned and I moved in a different direction, I can certainly draw from the experience in a spiritual way. How so?

Well, I would see some pretty horrific cases of bad oral hygiene....plaque attack!!

Why? Because those people lacked

1. EDUCATION
and/ or
2. MOTIVATION

...to clean their teeth. They suffered from ignorance or lack of enthusiasm to BRUSH THEIR TEETH PROPERLY EVERY DAY.

We can all imagine the effects of skipping a day in brushing our teeth right? Wouldn't be a pretty sight or smell :S Therefore we would not think twice to neglect doing it EVERY DAY.

So if I think to myself, if look after my oral health so well, how more important it is to look after my spiritual health, since I am a soul and not the every-changing body and mind.

Oral hygiene (a.k.a learning how to use a toothbrush and then actually doing it !) keeps our teeth clean.

Now this looks a lot better than the above!

Similarly, Srila Prabhupada's books EDUCATE and MOTIVATE us on how to keep our hearts "fresh, sparkling white and clean" by brushing away all:

envy
selfishness
pride
lust
anger
greed
and ignorance/illusion

...and uncovering the real sparkling white nature of the soul which is:

without envy
selfless
humble
servant by nature
compassionate
generous
full of spiritual knowledge and wisdom

.....and then the Holy Names of Radha and Krishna, can be happily seated on the throne of our hearts.

So here is how Srila Prabhupada's books lead to the success of our spiritual lives by opening our hearts up to Radha Londonisvara :0)....

I would recommend reading this section of Chaitanya Caritamrita below.....because by the mercy of Srila Prabhupada, it will give deeper meaning to this blog and change your experience of RATHA YATRA forever!

Stop the Crazy Mind !!!

How many births must we pass before a dramatic fundamental hits home? The essence of maya is deception. Can we really accept that? Troubled by our mind, harassed by our senses, we allow the illusory energy to dupe us.

Here's the common scenario:

"I'm so tired of battling my mind's agitation. Maybe if I just surrender somewhat to the dictations, the reaction won't be so bad.
"When I peer out at the world through my senses, though I know I'm probably seeing topsy turvy, still, the dedicated slaves of the material energy—those folks completely in maya—seem more peaceful.
"They don't have to fight the agitations; they've surrendered, in blissful ignorance. Even though I have access to superior knowledge, I wonder how long can I resist."

Don't judge a book by its cover, or a car by its color. Turn the pages of material existence, lift up its hood, the bonnet—you'll find a pathetic mess.
For a bhakti practitioner, agitations stand out in high contrast, as a black spot does on a white cloth, or a black cloud in a clear blue sky. Therefore they can seem so intimidating to a spiritual practitioner.

For those unfortunate souls lost in the illusory energy, however, the whole of life—all of the cloth, all of the sky—is a 100% agitation. You see, any semblance of peace is at best uneasy, tenuous, and laced with anxiety.

In other words, there are no lasting, significant patches of blue to break up the thick covering of storm clouds covering the entire sky.

"Both the lowest of fools and he who is transcendental to all intelligence enjoy happiness, whereas persons between them suffer the material pangs." (S. bhag. 3.7.17)

HH Devamrta Swami

Modes of Nature

It is so easy to be enthusiastic about a project in the beginning .... but to act on this enthusiasm takes a certain type of personal strength in order to shake of the thick layers of the mode of ignorance that envelope us like a seemingly warm and cosy blanket but which is really slowly suffocating us in the form of lack of progress and moving forward.

Karma anyone?

Disgusting ....

Anyone think there maybe a slight connection between world wars and civil wars and family wars, and neighbour wars and the most scariest of them all ... inside your own mind wars ... and the totally unnecessary killing of millions of animals worldwide?

Just a thought ....

Mind your own business !

In life there are three businesses:

1) My Business

2) God's Business

3) Your Business

I cannot control number 2 - that will go on regardless of what I think or say....

And I cannot really control number 3 either - even though I would like to ...

So really what I need to do in order to be happy and at peace is concentrate on number 1.

You see it is not what the problem is in life that matters it is how I approach it.

Every 'problem' is an opportunity to grow and seek out a personal challenge.

However what tends to happen is that we think by controlling number 3 we will sort out our problems.

BIG MISTAKE !

I cannot change someone no matter how hard I may try or get upset.

I can only act in the right way myself.

One way of doing this is to recognise how I might have contributed to the problem.

Hard to believe I know but as they say it takes two to tango.

What could I have done differently?

How could I have helped clear some channels of communication?

What qualities do I see in the other person which I refuse to see in myself?

So the solution with our problems starts with us.

Are you ready for a closer inspection?

Holding onto hot coal

When we hold onto hot coal it hurts ... really bad ... and yet we keep holding on ... really tightly sometimes too ... and our hand hurts so much and still we keep holding on.

Sounds silly doesn't it?

Who holds onto hot coal?

Not me I hear you cry!

Actually you do ...

Whenever you hold a grudge, form a pre-judgement, cannot let go of the past - you are holding onto hot coal and only hurting yourself.

We imagine we will 'get even' with the other person and we consume our thoughts with revenge and exacting supreme justice upon them.

But the only person who is getting hurt is you  ....  you who is holding onto the hot coal.

Let it go!

It does not matter who said what, did what, does not do what.

Don't self inflict pain upon yourself.

It is just not worth it.

Letting go of the hot coal does not mean we forget what someone did to us.

We remember what they did but we don't allow ourself to be locked in the past and be consumed by it ... thus causing more pain by dwelling on the nature of the hot coal in our hand.

Krsna is the Absolute Truth.

He sees what each of us does as the Supersoul in our hearts.

Krsna also knows who is the real victim and where justice needs to be meted.

Our life is not just starting from year dot when we came out of our mothers wombs.

We have been around for a long time - and carried a lot of hot coals and likewise caused a lot of hot coals to be carried in our name too.

So just let it go.

How do you know this particular hot coal is not one which had your name on it in a previous life coming back to you  - neatly arranged by Krsna - and hand delivered in the guise of karma?

Or hot coal again sent by Krsna for you to gain greater humility and tolerance and labelled as that special mercy called 'Krsna Karma' & coming to us after we take formal initiation and think we are through with all hot coals .....??

So you see it is really just not worth it.

Don't allow this hot coal to burn up any tender bhakti saplings sown in your heart.

Don't allow this hot coal to destroy relationships with those around you - as we all wonder why you are torturing yourself and cannot just 'drop' the hot coal  - as you just keep holding it tighter and closer to you.

Take a deep breath.

Take shelter of dear Sri Sri Radha Londonisvara and just let that hot coal fall to the ground .... where it will sizzle a little and eventually die out ....

Let the dirt rise up !

Srila Prabhupada has explained that this process is like taking a stick and swirling it in a body of water and seeing all the mud settled at the bottom coming to the top.

This is what happens when we take to this process - we stir up and dislodge (sometimes painfully due to our attachments) the dirt accumulated in the bottom of our hearts for so many lifetimes like greed, anger, pride, envy etc

Stuff we thought we never had even is dredged up.

Keep chanting sincerely and attentively as this dirt has to come out .... Don't stop to analyse it or even enjoy it.

Let it all float up and go away and once all is clean then Krsna and Radha will come and sit on the throne of your heart.
